More and more data support the use of a vaporizer to let cannabis users avoid smoke and minimize respiratory problems. I am curious about reasons folks don't use vaporizers. I've heard some concerns about costs, the perception that the vaporizer really isn't essential, and a few expressions about an inability to get the same subjective experience with the vaporizer. Any thoughts?

Since smoking pot absorbs less than 5% of the carcinogens that smoking cigarettes, is there really a pressing need to switch out vaporizers? This is an especially important argument when considering that vaporizers will likely be considered "drug paraphernalia" after a significant number of medical marijuana patients do switch over.

I have the same concern. For the most part, the vaporizers that I have seen are bulky, and power fed to reach the desired temp. I recently saw a "vaporizer" which was a normal pipe size and required only the heat of a lighter to reach the required temp. (around $70.)

I hadn't considered the issue of paraphernalia laws. Tobacco doesn't really vaporize, but a few herbs (damiana, lavender, peppermint) can release their oils at the temperature that most vaporizers reach. (I don't know if I'd want to stand in front of a judge and explain why I loved to vaporize peppermint!)

The bulk and need for electricity is true, too. I have seen some portable ones advertised but haven't actually seen one up close. Thanks for the input!

I have been smoking marijuana for forty years; almost on a daily basis. I have recently started using a vaporizer; bloody brilliant. Because I smoked cigarettes for 25 years my lungs were screaming for a rest. The vaporizer is the CERTAINLY the least harmful way of consuming marijuana, except for ingestion; and that is a different experience alltogether.
I no longer wake with heavy feeling in my lungs, and with no cough.
While the top of the range cost US$600, an adequete model can be purchased for around US$70, but make sure you get one with a ceramic bowl rather than metal. These get too hot and burn the dope; defeating the purpose.
They take a little getting used to, but worth perservering.
If you are smoking marijuana, surely the paraphernalia laws are the least of your problems, unless you are lucky enough to live in Holland.

For many medical users vaps are fine when you are home or have a private work situation, but for those that hourly doses are the norm they are just not discrete enough.

A further problem down here in New Zealand our Customs not only seize but destroy Vaps at the border .. even with supportive medical letters. To date I have had one volcano, and one Invap siezed and destroyed .
This is Govt that gives out free needles to the hard drug users because of health factors ... but will not consider Vaps for medical cannabis users ... in fact if caught in possessions of a vap and cannabis the penalty is somewhat worse than the product alone.

Kepp up the good work in the US , with a bit of luck we might follow on you coat tails one day..

Reply to Tony in New Zealand.
8) Your comment surprises me greatly. Not only do you have companies in New Zealand selling vaporizers, but I send them to there on a regular basis from Australia, without any problems at all. Maybe it's the Customs labelling that's the problem; I send them as "aromatherapy burners" and have had no situations arrise.
I would have thought that companies sending them worldwide would have known about such restrictions, and labelled accordingly. If you want to try again, you can check out our "VapoHead" marijuana (herbal) vaporizers at;
http://www.cheatingthehangman.com.au
They sell for US$90 delivered. We are an Aussie company, providing free shipping worldwide, and we guarantee prompy delivery, with discreet, plain packaging.
Best Wishes,
Wade.

The journal Nature is reporting positive news from a vaporizor study conducted by Donald Abrams out in San Francisco:

"Inhaling cannabis without the smoke: Study shows vaporizer delivers marijuana 'safely and effectively'"
http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070508/full/070508-11.html

There'd be more research on the effectiveness of different delivery routes including vaporization, if it weren't for...the Drug War!!!

Quote:
The first studies to highlight the advantages of using vaporizers for cannabis were published more than five years ago, but the pace of research has been slow, partly because there is only one source of research-approved marijuana in the United States — the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) — which critics accuse of dictating research along a political agenda. A legal ruling this February recommended that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) end NIDA's monopoly on the production of marijuana for research approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and by the DEA.

Vaporize this: Pot brownies maintain the high longer albeit not as quickly.
