Regarding the 'plan' - does America really need another drug czar? And does DPA really support the current 'treatment' industry in America? -- DPA continues to be short on addressing the racial, class, and gender issues at work in relation to drug policy.

Go-o-od question. Here is "Our Plan," as articulated by DPA Office of National Affairs Director Bill Piper. (http://www.drugpolicy.org/news/112008plan.cfm)

What do ya'll think? How do we get from where we are (millions of Americans behind bars, still more forced into probation or treatment programs) to where we want to be (I suppose we all have a different take on this one ... I'd personally like to see all prisons abolished, along with capitalism and the state, but I don't believe everyone agrees with me on that one). And if we disagree about where we want to be, can we agree on some steps in a better direction? Personally, I believe that a drug czar who approaches drug policy from a public health perspective, rather than with a criminal justice lens, is while not by any means ideal, better than who we have now. But I think this is a very important question, and I'd love to hear what others have to say on it.

Not only does America not need another drug czar, America does not need a drug policy. The DEA, the ONDCP, the Partnership for an Un-free America and all their arms, branches and spin-offs should be disbanded immediately. Let them pee in front of strangers if they think it's necessary for a good life; all most of us want from our government is to left alone. And if we need advice on the care and feeding of our own bodies, well, that's what doctors are for.

Surely the leaders of the most powerful nation on Earth have more important things to do than worry about what's in the urine of private citizens.
